Statement of Object
The Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, was begun by the Punjab Government in 1963. On the reorganisation of the erstwhile Punjab State with effect from the 1st November, 1966, the Institute has vested in the Central Government. It is proposed to make the institute a statutory body corporate and declare it as an institution of national importance under Entry 64 of List I of the Seventh Schedule to the Constitution of India so that it may develop as a high level institution of medical education and research on the pattern of All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.
2. The Bill is intended to achieve the above object.
